AI Seoul Summit & AI Global Forum

The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea jointly hosted the "AI Seoul Summit" and "AI Global Forum" on May 21-22. This event followed the inaugural summit at Bletchley Park in the U.K. last November, which focused on AI safety.

During the two-day AI Seoul Summit, global leaders adopted the "Seoul Declaration," emphasizing the principles of safety, innovation, and inclusivity in artificial intelligence (AI).

The "Seoul Declaration" holds significance as it reflects the commitment of leaders from Group of Seven member countries, including U.S. Vice President Kamala Devi Harris, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. Also in attendance were European Commission Vice President Vĕra Jourovа́ and heads of other international organizations such as the United Nations and Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Corporate leaders from tech giants like Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Open AI, Samsung Electronics, and Korean web portal Naver also participated.

The declaration underscores the leaders' dedication to fostering international cooperation and dialogue on AI amidst its rapid advancements and profound impact on economies and societies worldwide. It supports existing efforts to establish or expand AI safety institutes, research programs, supervisory bodies, and other relevant institutions, promoting cooperation on safety research and sharing best practices through collaborative networks.

The "AI Seoul Summit" further highlights South Korea's leadership in AI. The country is renowned for its robust AI industry ecosystem, proprietary digital platforms, and the capacity of its citizens and businesses to harness AI innovations comprehensively nationwide.
