Jeju Special Self-Governing Province won the grand prize at the first Local Government AI Innovation Awards, and has been recognized as a leading region in AI-based administrative innovation.

Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Police Agency applied the smart transportation system to all 1,120 traffic signals across the province and to 146 fire engines. As a result, a total of 8,047 emergency transports were safely supported in 2024, averaging 22 costs per day.

Since the system was implemented, no accidents have occurred during emergency vehicle operations. The time required per kilometer decreased by about 16.5%, while average speed increased by 18.9%.

In addition, by utilizing smart intersections installed at 100 major junctions in downtown Jeju City, travel speed improved by 14% and delay time decreased by 22.3%. This resulted in annual savings of about 1.7 billion won in congestion and environmental costs.

This system developed an integral AI-based traffic information service, significantly reducing costs.

Using AI-based video analysis, the system automatically recognizes license plates at around 740 existing infrastructure, such as surveillance CCTVs, and collects and analyzes traffic information.

Without the need to install separate Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI), the system enable efficient data collection and saved about 20.2 billion won in costs.

Meanwhile, at this year’s Local Government AI Innovation Awards, Suncheon City in Jeollanam-do Province was selected for the Minister of the Interior and Safery Award in the basic local government category, in recognition of its case presentation on using AI companion robots to provide care for vulnerable groups.

The Minister of Science and ICT Grand Prize was awarded to Gyeonggi-do Province, for establishing customized AI care and transportation innovations, and to Jung-gu of Seoul Metropolitan Government, for introducing AI-based administrative services.
