LOGODI Shares Best Policy Implementation Cases at the 2020
Local Government Competition

On November 17, 2020, LOGODI hosted the 2020 Local Government Competition with more than 30 presenters from local governments across Korea.

Since 2018, LOGODI has jointly hosted the competition annually with the Korea Research Institute for Local Administration (KRILA). It aims to acknowledge and present best practices in implementing the key tasks under the Five Policy Goals by local governments; a Government of the People, an Economy Pursuing Co-Prosperity, a Nation Taking Responsibility for Individual Lives, Well-balanced Development across Every Region, and the Korean Peninsula of Peace and Prosperity.

Before the contest, LOGODI received a total of 142 cases. After the rigorous reviews for two months, the evaluation committee, including external experts and field reviewers, selected the final six teams. There are a total of 3 award categories to highlight the excellent practices; the Minister Award (3), the LOGODI President Award (1), and the KRILA President Award (2).

The awarded cases will be published as a collection of best practices and distributed to local governments, government officials training centers, and other government agencies so that the local administrations will learn from each other and have an opportunity to improve their capacity together.

In the competition, Bucheon won the Grand Prize (the Minister of the Interior and Safety Award). The team introduced Korea's first parking robot Narka to solve traffic congestion and parking problems. Narka was developed to respond to various parking demands and contribute to revitalizing the robot industry.

Two Excellence Awards (the Minister of the Interior and Safety Award) went to Seongdong-gu of Seoul and Yeonggwang-gun of Jeollanam-do. Seongdong-gu has established an online living lab platform, Seongdong-gu Public Office, to solve small-scale local demands, such as installing smart security lights applied with IoT technology, creating a safe commute passage to school, securing the fire apparatus access roads, and a priority parking area for parent and child.

Yeonggwang-gun presented its achievements to become a pivotal player in the e-Mobility industry, such as actively promoting R&D capacities, attracting business investment, holding an expo, establishing a total system of e-Mobility development, evaluation, demonstration, and certification, and selected as a regulation-free special zone.

Also, Geumjeong-gu (Small Library) in Busan, Gwangsan-gu (Economic Vaccine Council for Mining Sector), and Gyeongnam Provincial Office (Regional Innovation Platform) received the Encouragement Award.

At the award ceremony, Dr. Lee In-jae, the President of LOGODI, said, "The competition provides a place to share and celebrate the achievements of local governments by doing their utmost to implement the key tasks.” He also added that the best practices presented will be reflected in the LOGODI curriculum (case presentations, field trips, etc.) and spread across the country to create more achievements.
